Every quarter, Police Minister Bheki Cele holds a press conference that is televised live, where he presents a grim outlook on the security situation in one of the world's most dangerous countries.

 

During the period from January to March, there was a 3.4% increase in the number of murders compared to the same period last year, resulting in a total of 6,289 recorded cases. However, Mr. Cele highlighted a positive trend by noting that fewer children were killed compared to the previous year, with child murders declining by 20%. The minister expressed optimism, stating that progress is being made in the fight against criminals.

 

In terms of international comparison, South Africa has an average of ten homicides per 100,000 inhabitants, which is significantly higher than countries like Japan with nearly zero homicides and France with only one, according to data from the World Bank.

 

South Africa has earned a reputation as the "epicenter of rape" due to the alarmingly high number of reported cases. In the first three months of the year, more than 10,500 rape cases were opened, indicating a slight decrease of 2.8% compared to the same period last year.

 

However, there was an increase of over 20% in cash-in-transit attacks, which involve robberies targeting vehicles transporting cash, and a nearly 6% rise in thefts from residences.

 

These statistics highlight the ongoing challenges faced by South Africa in combating crime and ensuring public safety. The government and law enforcement agencies continue to work towards addressing these issues and improving the security situation in the country.
